Growing up, there was always music in my house. My parents and siblings all sang in various groups from choir to barbershop quartets, and playing piano was de rigueur. My dad even had a piano in his office at work. I started off playing classical piano and did recitals with my brother. I switched to saxophone in high school and played in the band. I didn’t really start singing until the 70’s, and by then rock was king. Once out of the house, it wasn’t long before I started my first band, a loud but creative garage project that generated some songs that we still do today in Custom Neon. I linked up with Dave in the 80’s and formed a new group, doing covers and original rock for gigs in Davis and Northern California. Even during times when I wasn’t in a band, I always had my sax with me, and often I’d find myself singing and playing sax on stage with whatever group was on stage. I’ve always loved to harmonize, and in Custom Neon we’re lucky to have a lot of strong vocals. Through life’s changes, rock has been both my escape and my coming home. Performing in Custom Neon, I always try to lay it on the line. Whether it’s 20 or 2000 people out there, I put my heart into every gig. When the joint starts jumpin’, it’s magic.
